Raleigh, North Carolina – North Carolina state legislator Accused by the authorities of committing sexual crimes A 15-year-old resigned from his legislative seat on Friday. His departure came after the Speaker of Parliament announced the formation of a committee to investigate his alleged misconduct.
The House Clerk’s Office received a letter signed by Democratic Rep. Cecil Brockman of High Point to resign immediately.
House leaders from both parties, as well as Democratic Gov. Josh Stein, have called on Brockman to resign since his arrest three weeks ago on two counts of sex crimes with a child and indecent liberties with a child.
Brockman, who has served in the House since 2015, wrote that he needed to focus on his defense given the serious allegations against him.
“As a result, I am currently unable to perform my duty and serve my constituents,” Brockman said. Brockman’s Guilford County Democratic officials will now select someone to complete his two-year term through the end of 2026.
Republican House Speaker Destin Hall announced earlier Friday the formation of a bipartisan House committee to “investigate the accusations and recommend expulsion if necessary” from the chamber, according to a Hall press release. The state constitution gives the House of Representatives the power to remove its members. The last time the full House of Representatives voted to remove a member was in 2008.
Hall said later on Friday that Brockman’s departure “saves the House from a difficult expulsion and ends this troubling chapter.”
Brockman, 41, remained in jail Friday, records show Bond is just over $1 million. A court hearing on Brockman’s attorney’s request to reduce bail is scheduled for Monday.
