new orleans — The Archdiocese of New Orleans will pay At least $230 million To hundreds of victims of clergy sex abuse under a settlement approved Monday by a federal judge after years of negotiations.

Richard Trahant, the attorney representing the victims in the case and a spokesman for the diocese, confirmed the settlement had been approved to The Associated Press on Monday.

Earlier this month, some of the survivors behind more than 500 abuse allegations testified in court, sharing painful memories that continue to impact their lives decades later.

Some recalled their struggles with drug abuse, their struggles with intimacy, and wondered whether they themselves were responsible for what happened. Some said they had forgiven the church, others said they could not.
