Claire McCashill: Republicans are lying to the American people about the closure of Trump’s government

This is an adapted extract of October 1 Episode of “Morning Joe”.

On Wednesday, the Federal Government first closed in almost seven years, after the Senate rejected the Stopgap expenditure bill of the Chamber. Millions of federal employees are ready to lose their payment checks, and even more Americans will lose access to government services.

Donald Trump, JD Vance and Republican leaders in Congress have falsely affirmed that Democrats are closing the government for demand demands for undocumented immigrants. The official account of the Senate Republicans accused the Democrats of keeping the government “hostages” to “give illegal foreigners to health free health.”

Under Trump, it seems that the Republicans have felt very comfortable with the lie. Democrats are not closing the government to finance free medical care for people who are illegally. In fact, undocumented immigrants are already prohibited from participating in medical care programs financed by the Federal Government.

The real reason why the Democrats are drawing a line in the sand is to protect the 22 million Americans who depend on federal subsidies to make health insurance more affordable. Without the action of the Congress, the improved premium tax credits of the Law on Low Price Health Care will expire at the end of the year. Democrats refuse to sign a financing agreement that does not include extending those subsidies.

That’s what it is about: prevent millions of Americans from having to pay more for health insurance.

Politically, it is difficult to know how all this will come out in washing, but it is a good sign for the Democrats that Republicans feel they need to lie to the US people about the true reason behind this closure.

Democrats are in a strong position here. Republicans control the camera, but cannot obtain a fund of financing law in the finish line without support from the entire hall. Democrats in the Senate should stay united behind the minority leader Chuck Schumer and stay clean in the messages: Democrats are trying to help the US people, while Republicans are trying to lie to them.
