NEED TO KNOW

  • During an Oct. 8 meeting with conservative influencers, President Donald Trump received a note from Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

  • The note, which was captured by photographers in the room, revealed to the president that he needed to approve a statement on social media about the tentative peace deal between Israel and Hamas.

  • Trump continued his meeting for several minutes before finally leaving; issued a statement a few hours later

A memo that Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote to President Donald Trump offers insight into how things work in the White House, particularly when it comes to the president’s social media presence.

On Wednesday, October 8, Trump, 79, was holding a meeting with conservative influencers and the press when Rubio caught his attention. According to the Associated Press, Rubio had a private update for the president.

He handed Trump a note about needing him to “approve” a social media post, suggesting Trump had not written the post himself.

A photo captured by the AP zoomed in on the message and revealed what it said: “You must approve a Truth Social post soon so we can announce the deal first.”

The note referenced a peace deal that Trump has been helping negotiate between Israel and Hamas. CNN reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the leaders of Hamas (the group that rules Gaza and which the US State Department designated as a terrorist group) had reached a tentative agreement on a first step to end a years-long war.

During the meeting, Trump was quick to inform his audience that he had good news.

“The Secretary of State just gave me a note saying we’re very close to a Middle East deal and they’re going to need me pretty quickly,” Trump said, according to the AP. “So we’ll answer a couple more questions.”

The outlet noted that the meeting continued for about 10 more minutes before Trump said he was going to “try to solve some problems in the Middle East.”

He continued: “Although I am very well represented by our Secretary of State. He could probably do an even better job than me, but who knows.”

“We don’t want to take any chances. So we’re going to do it,” Trump told the assembled group.

Trump’s team shared the announcement on Truth Social at 6:51 pm local time. The AP reported that the message was posted about two hours after the meeting ended.

“I am very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have signed the first phase of our Peace Plan. This means that ALL hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw its troops to an agreed line as the first steps towards a strong, lasting and eternal peace,” the post said.

Trump’s statement continued: “All parties will be treated fairly! This is a GREAT Day for the Arab and Muslim world, Israel, all surrounding nations, and the United States of America, and we thank the mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, who worked with us to make this historic and unprecedented event a reality. BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS!”

The deal, which must be approved by Israel’s security cabinet before it is official, focuses on the release of hostages Hamas took during an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, CNN reported. In exchange, Israel would release Palestinian prisoners.

Trump has been helping negotiate the deal between the sides and has taken a tough stance against Hamas.

“Hamas has been a ruthless and violent threat, for many years, in the Middle East! They have killed (and made lives unbearably miserable), culminating in the October 7 MASSACRE, in Israel, babies, women, children, the elderly and many young men and women, boys and girls, preparing to celebrate their future life together,” he wrote in Truth Social.

Threatening bloodshed, he said the group had been “given one last chance.”

“The great, powerful and very wealthy nations of the Middle East and the surrounding areas beyond, together with the United States of America, have agreed, with the signature of Israel, to PEACE, after 3000 years, in the Middle East. THIS AGREEMENT ALSO SPARES THE LIVES OF ALL REMAINING HAMAS FIGHTERS!” He continued, giving the group a deadline to make the decision.

He concluded by writing: “If this LAST CHANCE deal is not reached, all HELL, the likes of which has never been seen before, will break out against Hamas. THERE WILL BE PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
