The Eagles are in Los Angeles for a key matchup against the Chargers on ESPN’s Monday Night Football, and the Birds are within striking distance despite an ugly first half of offensive football. With the second half set to begin, we’re looking at takeaways and observations from the first half as Philadelphia trails 10-6 after Jake Elliott missed a 51-yard field goal attempt as time expired.

Saquon Barkley

The Eagles focused on getting Barkley involved, and the All-Pro running back had 41 yards on five carries in the first quarter. In total, Barkley had 13 carries for 69 yards. His counterpart, Omarion Hampton, had five carries and 24 yards in the first half.

Quarterback Comparison

Hurts was charged with three turnovers on two ugly interceptions midway through the second quarter. Hurts was 10-19 for 95 yards, two interceptions and a rating of 27.2. Herbert is very tough and was 6-12 passing for 95 yards, one touchdown, one interception and a rating of 69.8.

Kevin Patullo

Nick Sirianni said he had more contributions offensively this week, but aside from a few empty sets, it’s the same inefficient offensive system. Philadelphia had 11 first downs, 2-7 on third downs, 168 yards and 0-1 in the red zone.

Defense of the eagles

Philadelphia allowed five first downs, 2-6 on third downs, 127 yards and 1-1 in the red zone after the Chargers’ initial outburst.

Jordan Davis/Moro Ojomo

Davis had one tackle and one tackle for loss in the first half.

Cooper DeJean vs. Ladd McConkey

Earlier this week, Chargers OC Greg Roman had this to say about the matchup between McConkey and DeJean.

OC Greg Roman yesterday on Cooper DeJean’s matchup with Ladd: “I was born in the night, but not last night. Vic will have different ways to take advantage of coverage to the point where it’s not one-on-one all the time… But as far as the matchup, I like Ladd against anyone.”

McConkey has gone without a catch on two targets.

More Chargers offensive tackle injuries

Trey Pipkins went down for the Chargers in the second quarter. That’s already on top of other notable injuries, and it’s his third offensive tackle. The Chargers are already without their two best offensive tackles: Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt. Bobby Hart replaces Pipkins.
