Michigan football has done a solid job of retaining many of the players it wanted that had entered the transfer portal. But apparently not all.

On Friday, it was a surprise when second-year linebacker Cole Sullivan walked through the portal. His entry came with the warning that a return to Ann Arbor was possible. In the days that followed, it seemed that his return was not only possible, but perhaps probable. However, Oklahoma and Brent Venables kept pushing. And while there was optimism with the Wolverines that the likely starting linebacker would return in 2026, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Sullivan is headed to Norman after all.

Sullivan will return to Ann Arbor in 2026, albeit in a different uniform, as Oklahoma plays at Michigan in Week 2. Without Sullivan, the Wolverines will hope Jimmy Rolder returns. The Maize and Blue also still have Troy Bowles, Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng, Chase Taylor and Jaydon Hood at the moment, so they are not lacking depth.
