He framed the recent challenges and achievements of Nepal as part of a broader call for a strengthened multilateral action.
Mr. Thapa opened when observing the political movement led by youth earlier this month, the “Gen-Z protests”, which demanded transparent governance, equal opportunities throughout Nepali society and the end of corruption.
“His aspirations are for nothing less than a fair, fair and prosperous Nepal,” he said, while regretting the violence that charged lives and damaged the public infrastructure during the demonstrations.
He highlighted the subsequent political milestones after the transformative protests, including the appointment of the first minister of the country and the next general elections in March 2026.
Thapa described these developments as steps to consolidate democracy, the reconstruction of institutions and the restoration of public trust.
World at a crossroads
As for global concerns, Ambassador Thapa warned about the increase in military expenses, unattered commitments with sustainable development and worsening of the climate crisis.
He said they were a reminder that multilateral institutions, including the UN, must be revitalized to respond effectively.
He also addressed in progress worldwide, including war in Ukraine and conflicts in Sudan and Sahel. He highlighted the “heavy cost” born by civilians in Gaza, while requested the immediate release of all hostages, including a Nepalese student taken by Hamas during the October 7 attacks in Israel.
Global Solidarity
Mr. Thapa requested accelerated progress towards the 2030 Agenda and the ambitious climatic action, emphasizing the reduction of emissions and the expansion of renewable energy.
He also highlighted the need for a fairer global representation in international financial institutions and the Security Council, asking to become more inclusive, transparent and responsible.
Remembering that the UN has served for 80 years as a lighthouse of peace, justice, human rights and development, Ambassador Thapa concluded with a declaration of collective responsibility:
“When the United Nations succeeds, humanity as a whole is successful. When he hesitates, it is the innocent and the vulnerable ones who have the heaviest cost. We are together, united and determined, to guarantee peace and lasting prosperity in the world.”
