The Oregon Ducks’ first five weeks went as well as they could have wanted. They had an average margin of victory of 34.4, completely demolishing several opponents.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys were those demolished teams, as the Ducks cruised to a 69-3 home win. Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy poked the proverbial bear out during the week, bemoaning Oklahoma State’s NIL background compared to Oregon’s, among other complaints, and shots were fired at the Ducks program.

Gundy survived two more weeks before he was fired, although one of them was a bye week. A 19-12 loss to Tulsa led to his dismissal, combined with the disheartening loss to Oregon in Week 2.

Three weeks later, two more of the Ducks’ opponents fired their head coaches.

The Oregon State Beavers were first, as Trent Bray was fired after leading his team to an 0-7 record. That included a 41-7 loss in Week 4 at the hands of Oregon in which Oregon State was outscored by 34 points after tying the game at seven in the first quarter.

Then, the biggest one.

The Penn State Nittany Lions appeared to be a contender even after their 30-24 home loss in double overtime to the Ducks. After all, it was a very close matchup between two teams that harbored Big Ten national championship hopes.

But after back-to-back demoralizing losses to the UCLA Bruins and Northwestern Wildcats, marking three straight losses overall and an 0-3 start in Big Ten play, head coach James Franklin has been fired.

Although Oregon suffered its first loss of the season in Week 7 against the Indiana Hoosiers, its dominance early in the season may be reflected in the trail of fired head coaches that fell to the Ducks.
