The veteran goalkeeper is currently in the middle of a long absence from the field following back surgery. Even before this setback, his role had become uncertain following the summer arrival of new signing Joan Garcia, with it widely believed that ter Stegen would no longer be the first-choice goalkeeper under manager Hansi Flick.
