The Toronto Blue Jays wanted Bo Bichette back.

But at the start of the 2026 MLB season, it worked out well for Bichette to end up with the New York Mets.
Bichette signed a three-year, $126 million contract with the Mets in free agency that includes a pair of opt-outs; essentially, he can opt to become a free agent again next offseason.
The Blue Jays apparently stopped paying Bichette a whopping $42 million per year.
Its pivot was Japanese star Kazuma Okamoto with a four-year, $60 million contract.
And with the caveat that it’s still early, the Blue Jays have no reason to miss Bichette right now.
Bichette is 3-for-27 to begin his career with the Mets.

Meanwhile, Okamoto is already being considered a potential MLB star just a week into his time in the league.

There are still small samples in play, so this isn’t to say the Blue Jays will never regret the loss of Bichette.
It’s just early-season vibes, and right now, they’re clearly better off with Toronto’s new infielder than the guy they lost.
Bichette is a proven hitter, a guy who led the American League in hits multiple times and was important for the Blue Jays in the 2025 postseason despite coming off a knee injury.

Chances are Bichette will eventually find his way to the Mets.
For now, though, the Blue Jays are fine with Okamoto.
