Newark, New Jersey – Federal authorities are investigating after a United Airlines plane landing Sunday at Newark Liberty International Airport struck a light pole on the nearby New Jersey Turnpike.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the accident on United Airlines Flight 169 occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on Sunday. The Boeing 767 plane landed safely and arrived in the United States from Venice, Italy, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The airline later said in a statement that United Flight 169 “came into contact with a light pole” on its final approach to Newark.
He added, “The plane landed safely and headed to the gate normally, and none of the passengers or crew members were injured.”
United said its maintenance team is assessing damage to the plane, and that the crew has been taken out of service while it conducts a “rigorous” flight safety investigation.
The National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement published on the X website that it had opened an investigation into the accident. She said an NTSB investigator would arrive in Newark on Monday, and that she had directed United to provide a cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder for the investigation. She added that a preliminary report is expected to be issued within 30 days.
