los angeles — A 54-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of throwing Molotov cocktails at the federal building in Los Angeles, authorities said Tuesday. No one was hurt.
Security guards heard a man shouting derogatory comments about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement outside the downtown building on Monday, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The administration said that he then threw two incendiary devices at the guards.
“Fortunately, the bottles were not ignited and did not catch fire, and there were no injuries or damage to federal property,” the DHS statement said.
FBI agents arrested Jose F. Govil, of Los Angeles, said FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller. Federal prosecutors are expected to file a criminal complaint on Tuesday, she said.
It was not known Tuesday whether Jovel has an attorney. The federal public defender’s office did not immediately return a phone call asking if he was represented by one of his attorneys.
Govil, who was carrying four knives when he was arrested, has a “long criminal history,” including an attempted murder charge in 1987, the DHS statement said.
Letters have been sent to the U.S. Attorney’s Office seeking additional details.
