Weather experts are tracking when next hurricane could impact the United States in October as the 2025 hurricane season does not end until late November. As Lorenzo develops as a tropical depression in the Atlantic, a new tropical wave is forming off the coast of Africa that multiple climate models project could become a hurricane that will pass through the Caribbean before moving north toward the southeastern coast of the Americas. Here is the hurricane forecast for mid to late October.
Will a hurricane hit the United States this week in mid-October?
Fortunately, weather models do not expect a hurricane to hit the US by the end of the week, but a tropical wave could become a named storm in the Caribbean late next week, October 21-25. If the storm becomes strong enough to become a tropical depression, it will be named Melissa.
As noted by meteorologist Brian Shields (aka Mr. Weatherman on YouTube) on October 15, 2025, two weather models show this system off the coast of Africa becoming a hurricane. The more aggressive U.S. GFS model calls for it to become a hurricane late next week and develop within the Caribbean Sea before potentially moving north toward the United States. Furthermore, according to the European model, it will also become a hurricane at the end of next week, but it will already approach the coast of Florida, near the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas.
Meanwhile, the Canadian GEM model projects that the wave will become a tropical storm early next week and will affect Puerto Rico, Barbados and Antigua and Barbuda. This is roughly in line with the German ICON model, which predicts it will become a tropical storm south of Jamaica by the middle of next week.
That said, there’s still about a week before forecasters know more about where this tropical wave is headed and how strong it will be. While the storm is likely to gain strength from high ocean temperatures in the Caribbean, wind shear could decrease the storm’s intensity.
