Phoenix Mercury assures OT’s victory against Minnesota Lynx for even WNBA semifinals

Alyssa Thomas nodded repeatedly as he walked back to the Mercury Bank of Phoenix after the Semifinals of the Wnba on the afternoon of Phoenix with the Minnesota Lynx.

Thomas seemed calm, as if he had expected the mercury to do what few have done before: staging a return in the WNBA playoffs against Lynx. After following Minnesota for 20 points in the middle of the third quarter, the Mercury contributed the advantage of Minnesota along the way to an 89-83 victory in extra time. The defensive stops led to Thomas scores and striker Satou Sabally, and with 4.3 seconds in the regulation, the Sami Whitcomomb guard pushed the game to an additional session with a triple that silenced the crowd of the target center.

With an impulse behind them, Mercury never followed in Ot. While Phoenix played a fourth game in Seven Nights, coach Nate Tibbetts admitted that he was worried about the energy of the players in a crucial 2 game in this series of the best five.

But as they have often done this season and this playoffs, Mercury never resigned.

“Pride and hardness. Degree,” Tibbetts said. “I couldn’t be more proud of our group for doing that.”

What they did was eliminate LYNX in Minnesota, only the fourth team to do it this season (including fever in the commissioner’s Cup). What they did was collect only their second victory in the history of the franchise when it followed at least 15 points in the half time. What they did was level their semifinal series before you become Phoenix for game 3 on Friday.

“It would have been very easy for us to give up tonight,” Tibbetts said. “Many teams would have done it. I am extremely proud of how we took a step forward and fight.”

Thomas led Mercury in his fight in the second half. She scored 14 of her 19 points after part time. Sabally scored 24 points on the team, making 5 of 11 triples. Sabally recovered from a shooting performance below game 1, when he was 3 of 11 from the field. His nine rebounds were critical and his only assistance was perhaps the most important pass of the night, finding Whitcomomb in the minor seconds of regulation.

Tibbetts said Whitcomb triple arrived in a broken play. He had expected Lynx to be cursed by three points with only remaining seconds in the regulation. But Minnesota did not, and after Whitcomb lost his first 3 -point attempt, buried his second attempt of 3 points of possession.

“Sami saved my A,” Tibbetts said, adding that his team did not run the right game in the late game situation. “And that is what the big players do, the big shooters.”

There is much that Mercury can still improve in the future. And three Minnesota players, led by the 24 of Napheaesa Collier, finished at least 20 points. But the series is now tied.

“We just still fight,” Tibbetts said.
