China and Russia presented the draft that received four votes in favor, nine against and two abstentions.
The text sought to extend the joint comprehensive action plan (JCPOA) for six months until next April, as well as resolution 2231 of the Council (2015) that supported it. He also encouraged the continuous commitment between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (OIEA).
Snapback ‘sanctions
The rejection means that the sanctions that were raised by virtue of the agreement will become tax as of Saturday night.
The development occurs a month after three European countries that signed the agreement, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, notified the Council about what they described as the “significant breach” of Iran and the violations, which triggers the so -called “Snapback mechanism.”
China’s representative deeply regretted that the resolution was not adopted and asked to defend regional peace and stability.
“A breakdown in the Iranian nuclear problem could trigger a new regional security crisis that goes against the common interests of the international community,” he said.
Ambassador Barbara Woodward explained why the United Kingdom voted no, saying “as this advice knows, Iran is challenging the global non -proliferation regime.” In addition, its nuclear climb has been detailed in more than 60 OIEA reports in the last six years.
“Iran’s actions mean that IEA cannot confirm that Iran’s nuclear program is exclusively peaceful,” he said.
“Among the steps he has taken, Iran is the accumulation of an enriched uranium reserve that lacks credible civil justification and has no precedents for a state without a nuclear weapons program.”
The attached representative of the United States, Dorothy Shea, was pleased that the Council rejected what he called “this last effort of the Russia and China Federation”, describing the text “a hollow effort to relieve Iran of any responsibility for its continuous significant breach of its nuclear commitments.”
The deputy permanent representative of Russia, Dmitry Polyanskiy, addressed the nations that refused to support the draft.
“Now, there are certainly no illusions,” he said. “These countries have definitely demonstrated that all their guarantees about their focus on reaching a diplomatic resolution to the question of the Iranian nuclear program during all these years were mere noise.”
